The Teatro Avenida is a theater in the Montserrat district of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.

Description

The Teatro Avenida opened on Avenida de Mayo 1908 with a piece of Lope de Vega. Director was María Guerrero, a Spanish -born theater director, who made ​​the classic drama in Argentina popular. The Teatro Avenida has been the focus of Spanish theater in Buenos Aires, after the Teatro Cervantes was made in 1933 to the National Comedy Theater and was known for his operetta productions and zarzuela, but also for special events such as the performance of Aida in favor of Spanish charities after the Spanish civil War. On March 8, 1945, the Catalan actress Margarita Xirgu appeared in the world premiere of House of Bernarda Alba by Federico Garcia Lorca at the Teatro Avenida.

From 1960, the interest in Spanish literature theater took off and the Teatro Avenida turned productions of Broadway plays to. One success was the production of Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate in 1963. However, the repertoire was very different and 1967, for example, Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata was performed. A few years later the theater of the Argentine impresario Faustino García was purchased, the Spanish director Moreno Torroba brought back in 1970. In the 1970s, the Zarzuela at the Teatro Avenida experienced a revival.

The military coup of 1976 resulted in a decline of the theater culture in the country and in 1977 the Teatro Avenida has been closed. 1979 a fire destroyed almost the building and it was re-opened until 19 June 1994. Today it is operated by the non-governmental organization Buenos Aires Lírica, the focus is on the classical opera.
