Avenue C (Manhattan)

The Avenue C is a street in the Alphabet City of New York City's Manhattan borough, United States. The road is also called Loisaida Avenue.

Location

The Avenue C is located between Avenue B and Avenue D. It begins at the East Houston Street and ends at 23rd Street. It runs from the 18th Street almost under the FDR Drive.

Gentrification

Rents along Avenue C rise rapidly and many long-established residents and businesses can no longer afford the rent increases. This is typical of many areas in Manhattan since 1990.

Puerto Rican heritage

The Avenue C is also called Loisaida Avenue in recognition of the Puerto Rican heritage of the district. Loisaida is Spanglish and corresponds to the sound when New York from Puerto Rico or Latinos " Lower East Side" issue. The history of this area is shown in the book Selling The Lower East Side. Although the attribution of the district to the East Village is almost universally accepted, many consider long -term residents, the area continues as part of the Lower East Side.

Community gardens

At the corner of 9th Street and Loisaida are two fairly large community gardens, which are maintained by the surrounding neighborhood. Transport

The Avenue C is served by bus lines M9 and M14D (MTA New York City Transit bus). The next bridge is the Williamsburg Bridge into Brooklyn and Manhattan empties into the Delancey Street - just a few blocks south of East Houston Street. The next tunnel is the Queens Midtown Tunnel, the opens Queens and Manhattan in the East 34th Street ( Midtown Manhattan ) opens.
