Avestan alphabet

The Avestan script is much younger than the spoken language Avestan. It was most likely developed in the era of Sassanid Empire of writing the Avestan language and was also used for Middle Persian texts.

After the Islamic conquest of Iran, the " Pahlavi " were - and the Avestan script of the Arabic script replaces the letters of the Persian. It is now used only by Zoroastrians.

It is based on the Aramaic cursive script erroneously called Pahlavi script ( which was used) but, in contrast to this a full alphabet of 37 consonants and 16 vowels. Another difference is that the letters are connected, such as in Arabic. The writing is counter-clockwise, so it will be written from right to left.
