Ávila Cathedral

The Catedral del Salvador is the Roman Catholic cathedral in Ávila. She is Spain's first Gothic cathedral and has features of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic to.

History

With the construction of the 12th century began in the second half. The client was King Alfonso VIII The first draft of the cathedral dates from Master Fruchel (died 1192 ), who was also the site management in 1172. First developed, based on the Abbey Church of St. Denis, the choir with chapels and double ambulatory. The nave was finished only in the 14th century in reference to the Cathedral of Toledo. Over time it was found that the proportions of ( very steep ) nave and low aisles caused static problems. In the 18th century, therefore, support arches were added and amplified the crossing piers.

The special feature of the cathedral is that the building has clear traits of a fortress and parts ( apse and choir games) are integrated into the boundary wall of the old town.

Equipment

The interior has been shaped by major sculptors.

Organ

The organ of the cathedral was built in the late 18th century by the organ builder Leandro Garcimartín and since then changed significantly. The Spanish trumpet stops are reconstructed. The instrument has stops on two manuals and pedal. All manual registers are divided in c1/cis1.
