AviSynth

AviSynth is a free frame server. While the current stable version 2.5 was written exclusively for Microsoft Windows, should of version 3.0 - which is in pre - alpha stage - a Linux port appear. The development, however, came to a complete standstill.

Overview

AviSynth has its own scripting language and lacks this a graphical user interface. The AviSynth scripts with the file extension ". AVS " include plain text, thus they can be edited with any text editor. With the help of this script language the user is possible with comparatively little effort to create your own filters. In addition, can be found on the website of the project of users ready-made scripts. Furthermore, the functionality of AviSynth with the help of plug-ins can be extended.

Operation

AviSynth acts as a frame server that reads files and the data stream passes on to another program by means of a virtual file. If ( for example VirtualDub ) opened with a supportive video editing program an AVS script file, then this program behaves towards the target as an AVI file, which would include a raw video and audio track. In this way, formats can be opened, which are not supported by the target program or would previously require the installation of a codec. Using a series of integrated and retrofit filters, the images and sound can already be edited by AviSynth before it is passed. Since no compression takes place, there is not loss to generation.

VapourSynth

Mid-2012 launched the programmer Fredrik Mellbin the project VarpourSynth, which is intended as a modern remake of AviSynth. In contrast to the model, VarpourSynth is platform independent and controlled multithreading. However, the native scripting language of AviSynth is no longer used, Python is used instead.
