Avola

Avola is a city of Syracuse in Sicily region of Italy with 31 342 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). Known about the borders of Italy is the red wine grape variety Nero d' Avola.

Location and data

Avola is located 27 km southwest of Syracuse near the Ionian coast. The inhabitants work mainly in industry and in agriculture. Avola is the center of the almond crop.

The city lies on the SS 115 from Syracuse to Ragusa. Avola has a rail connection to the railway line Caltanissetta Gela - Syracuse.

The neighboring municipalities are Noto and Syracuse.

History

In ancient times there was a place called Avola, which was settled by the Byzantines and the Arabs. In the earthquake of 1693, the town was completely destroyed. Avola was 8 km from the old city built in the shape of a hexagon again in 1695. Center is the Piazza Umberto I, on the cathedral stands.
