Avon Park is a city in Highlands County in the U.S. state of Florida with 8,836 inhabitants ( 2010).
Geography
Avon Park is located about 10 km north of Sebring and about 110 km south-east or south of Tampa and Orlando.
Religions
In Avon Park, there are 27 different churches with 14 different denominations. Among the belonging to a denomination churches the Baptist church is best represented with 8 churches. There are 2 to no denomination belonging churches ( as of 2004).
Demographics
According to the 2010 census, the then 8,836 inhabitants distributed to 4,162 households. The population density was 736.3 inh. / Km ². 55.5 % of the population were white, 28.1% African American, 0.3% Native American and 0.8 % Asian Americans. 11.0% were members of other ethnic groups and 4.3% in different ethnic groups. 29.2 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.
In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 33.2 % of all households lived in 35.8 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 66.7 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.65 persons and the average family size is 3.16 people.
29.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.1% were 20-39 years old, 22.6% were 40-59 years old and 22.6 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 36 years. 48.2 % of the population were male and 51.8 % female.
The average annual income was $ 28,189, while 28.0 % of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 78.92 % of the population spoke Spanish 19.0 %, and 2.08% spoke Haitian.
Economy
A significant industry, there is not. The main employment sectors are: education, health and social services: ( 16.6%), trade / retail ( 15.6%), finance, insurance and real estate (3.0 % ), construction ( 10.1%).
Traffic
Avon Park is traversed by U.S. Highways 27 and 98 and Florida State Road 17. The nearest airports are the Sebring Regional Airport (national, 20 km south-west ) and the Orlando International Airport ( around 120 km to the north ).
Crime
The crime rate in 2010 was 341 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) within the average range. There were two rapes, 15 robberies, 39 injuries, 85 burglaries, 243 thefts, nine car thefts and three arson.
