Avro 510

The Avro 510 was a two-seat seaplane of the British manufacturer Avro.

History

The machine, a zweistieliger, braced biplane with the eye-catching overhang - the upper wing were about one-third longer than the bottom - was built by Avro for the purpose of participating in an air race, the Britain Race in 1914. Was driven to " 510" by a water-cooled eight-cylinder Sunbeam engine (later referred as Sunbeam Nubian ).

Buoyancy in water produced a double float plus one spot float at the rear and at the wing tips.

In July 1914, the aircraft was built in the Avro plant in Manchester, the parts were then transported to the planned starting point of the race after Calshot. Due to the declaration of war on Germany England the race was canceled. Nevertheless, found start of the " 510 " instead, and they were satisfied with the flight performance.

After the flight tests, the English Admiralty acquired the machine and ordered a further five, slightly modified copies. These were indeed built and delivered, however, proved in practice to be insufficient. Satisfactory flight performance were only achieved in solo mode, with two passengers was a flight operations almost impossible. Except for a copy of the machines were spent in October 1915 the company Vickers for revision and improvement. In March 1916 we removed all the " 510" from the service.

Construction

The hull of the Avro 510 was covered in wood and fabric. Double float as well as rear and support swimmers were joined by a steel frame to the fuselage. The wings were also fabric used to cover wooden structures.
