Avro 530

The Avro 530 was a single-engine, two-seat biplane aircraft of the British manufacturer Avro.

History

The 530, a very clean aircraft built with clean lines, had a highly successful Avro for the fighter in the First World War and thus for Avro may be an economic success. However, there was a hand raising problems with regard to the originally planned engine, a water-cooled Hispano -Suiza engine with 300 hp ( 304.16 hp). On the other hand, it was also the 200 hp ( 202.77 hp) engine of the same manufacturer is not obtainable in sufficient quantities, since the bulk of the production was reserved for the Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a.

So Avro subject with this pattern in the participation in the tender for a new fighter aircraft to the competitor Bristol, and there were only two prototypes built eventually ( 2 more machines to have been built, but none of assigned serial numbers is known. )

As so often with Avro was the construction of the first machine in two production sites, the parts were manufactured in Manchester, Hamble when assembled and test flights.

The first flight of the 530 took place in July 1917. Initially it was flown without water cooler. We therefore decided not to get as much cooling air, on a spinner. Later - with cooler - a streamlined spinner was used. The machine had flaps that could be operated by the pilot via a handwheel

The second prototype was due to continued problems with the existing procurement Hispano -Suiza engine a 200 hp Sunbeam Arab engine, this machine did not have a spinner, and the vertical tail was bigger. In addition, new wings were used without airbrakes, but with ailerons.

Since the plane of the success was denied with the military, we wondered at Avro in 1920, the 530 rebuild into a fast passenger aircraft with tandem cockpit and a large luggage compartment, but no details are known about; a civil code has a 530 but never received.

Construction

The Avro 530 was a zweistieliger, braced biplane with equal length upper and lower wings. Fuselage and wings were made of a fabric -covered with wood construction. The chassis consisted of a rigid two-wheel main landing gear and a rigid tail skid.

The 530 did not have the proven Avro chassis with central skid, it was a new development application. The motor carrier was made of stiffened duralumin.

The machine was designed so that the pilot's head was above the upper wing, this provided a good view forward and upward, the rear gunner was the area down and to the rear cover.
