Avro Manchester
The Avro 679 Manchester was a British bomber of the Second World War.
History
The first flight took place in July 1939. The A.V. Roe and Company built the original version of Manchester Mk I only 20; then followed the Manchester Mk IA with larger vertical tail surfaces and an increased of 6.71 m to 10.06 m tail span. Total production amounted to 200 copies of which were from November 1940 to mid-1942 in service. The Manchester proved to be in use as a failure, the error was not to be found in the airframe, but in the drive. The four-engined development Manchester Mk III resulted from early 1941 to the far more powerful Avro Lancaster bomber.
