Awakatekisch ( Aguacateco, Awakateko, Balamiha, Qa'yol ) is a Mayan language, which is spoken by about 10000-35000 indigenous people in the municipality of Aguacatán in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes in the department of Huehuetenango in Guatemala.

Dissemination

At the 2002 census in Guatemala gave 9613 people (0.1%) Awakateko as their native language; 11,068 people (0.1%) described themselves as Awakateken. These figures are far below other estimates, such as by Tzian (1994 ), which indicates 34 476 Speakers in Guatemala. According to SIL International, the Akatekische is spoken in 1998 of about 18,000 people in Guatemala.
