Awarua Plains

The Awarua Plain is a large wetland area east of Bluff with a surface area of about 600 km ² and one of the Southland Plains. It extends over 35 km along the coast of Foveaux Strait in the far south of the South Island of New Zealand.

For this part of the coast include the Tiwai Point Peninsula, Awarua Bay, the Waituna Lagoon and Toetoes Bay. The plane originated mainly from alluvial deposits in the Mataura River. Together with the Oreti River, he is a radical of the glacial rivers that formed plains of the South Island. Several other small rivers flow on this stretch of coast in the Foveaux Strait, especially in the Awarua Bay and Waituna Lagoon.

Radio transmitter

The Awarua Plain is well suited because of the low horizon and high ground conductivity for radio transmitters, among which are:

  • The Unwin radar of La Trobe University
  • The Awarua Tracking Station of the European Space Agency
  • Awarua radio, a historic telegraph station of the New Zealand Post Office for the ship's radio.
