Awash

Awash ( አዋሽ AWAS ) is a city in Ethiopia's Afar region. It lies on the eponymous river Awash near the Awash National Park.

Awash lies on the road between Addis Ababa and Djibouti. Through the village runs a railway line, which is since about 2006 due to lack locomotive out of service, but should be taken around 2015 retreaded again. The train station is about 100 years old and serves as a budget hotel and restaurant. Economically Awash lives mainly from trading, but also has a Dromedarzucht, with exports to the Arab world.

On the afternoon of January 13, 1985 near the city of a heavy train disaster occurred. A busy with about a thousand people passenger train crashed when passing a bridge. After an initial message while 392 people came for her life, about 370 injuries were counted.

The Ethiopian Central Statistical Agency, according to Awash had 2005 11.053 inhabitants in the year. The city is predominantly Muslim, but also has an older Orthodox Christian Church.
