History

The city of Awka, formerly also called Oka, was famous in pre-colonial times for their metalwork. The area of Awka was the center of the Nri - culture that produced the earliest documented bronze objects from sub-Saharan Africa by 900.

Economy and infrastructure

Awka is the seat of the partially state-owned oil company Orient Petroleum Resources. The company plans to produce oil in the area of the River Anambra. In Awka are among other things the national television channels NTA Awka and operated by the Anambra State radio and television Anambra Broadcasting Service ( ABS).

The city has a university, founded in 1992, Nnamdi Azikiwe University with 24 706 students (2004 /2005).
