Axel Pehrsson-Bramstorp

Axel Pehrsson - Alarik Bramstorp ( born August 19, 1883 in Öja, Ystad Municipality, † February 19, 1954 in Lilla Isie, Trelleborg Municipality ) was a Swedish politician and Prime Minister of Sweden.

Family and career

Pehrsson was born the son of a farmer. He added in 1937 the name of his acquired farm Bramstorp his family nickname. After his father had died in 1897, he had to leave school to help on the farm. Only later he was able to extend his education through evening classes at a community college ( Folkhögskola ). Because of his success as a farmer, he was able to acquire several courts in later years.

Political career

Member of parliament and chairman of the party

Pehrsson began his political career in 1912 with the election of the member of the provincial Landtag ( county council ) in Malmo longer. In 1918 he was elected a deputy of the Second Chamber of the Diet, where he led the liberal Radical Association represented ( Frisinnade Landsföreningen ) until his election defeat in 1921.

He then joined the Farmers' Association founded in 1913 ( Bondeförbundet ), he acted as deputy of the Second Chamber, 1929-1949. Pehrsson was 1934-1949 chairman of the Farmers' Association.

Prime Minister from 1936 and Minister

Following the resignation of the Socialist government of Prime Minister Per Albin Hansson, after a vote defeat in the Reichstag, he was appointed by King Gustav V as Prime Minister on 19 June 1936. At the same time he assumed the office of the Minister of Agriculture. After the formation of a non - socialist coalition government had failed, he had to lead a minority government, which was based only on the Farmers' Union. Already on 28 September 1936 the Reichstag election, he had to resign. His reign was also known as " summer vacation government " (Semester Regeringen ) because of the short term.

His successor as prime minister, in turn, Per Albin Hansson, formed a coalition government of the Social Democratic Workers 'Party and the Farmers' Association. Hansson called Pehrsson Minister of Agriculture. He held that office in the formed by Hansson after the outbreak of the Second World War on December 13, 1939 collection of government by 31 July 1945.

After his resignation as Minister of Agriculture, he was chairman of the Farmers' Association and member of the Reichstag and also took over the chairmanship of the National Agricultural Confederation, until he had to give up these offices after a brain haemorrhage in 1949.

For his services to the Swedish policy to him in 1949 the Royal Seraphinenorden was awarded the highest Swedish Order.
