Axotomy

Axotomy is the process of ( artificial ) nerve transection, for example by cutting. The fact that the separation is thereby effected by intentionally differs from the axotomy axonotmesis.

Axotomy is often used in neurobiological research, for example, to investigate the regenerative capacity of the nervous system and to find ways to combat neurodegenerative diseases.

By axotomy may occur in the distal direction to Wallerian degeneration.
