Ayasofya Mosque

Ayasofya Mosque (Turkish: Ayasofya Camii; German Hagia Sophia Mosque ) bear her name in memory of the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque after the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans.

Importance

The Hagia Sophia ( from the Greek Ἅγια Σοφία " Holy Wisdom " ) was built in the 6th century AD, the main church of the Byzantine Empire and the religious center of Orthodoxy. It was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest ( 1453) and is now a museum ( Ayasofya Camii Müzesi, " Haghia Sophia Mosque Museum ").

The dome of the Hagia Sophia represents as it were the prototype is for the dome in later mosques.
