Ayl

Ayl is a wine village and a municipality in the Trier -Saar castle in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Saar castle. The place Ayl is a nationally recognized tourist.

Geography

Ayl located in a tributary of the lower Saar between the Mohlemskopf, a 321 m high hill north of Saar castle and the Ayler coupling, a 251 m high mountain tongue with the same name known vineyard.

To Ayl part of the district Biebelhausen. There is the Biebelhausener mill, a long-established and nationally known wholesale bakery and confectionery -.

History

Ayl was first mentioned in 1052 as ropes, closes as Archbishop Eberhard von Trier a contract with the Count Walram of Arlon. Roman cremation burials dating from around the year 300 testify but the fact that Ayl was inhabited at that time and was home to a Roman fort.

From the mid-16th century to 1790 the Trier cathedral chapter was the sole landowner.

On July 20, 1946 Ayl was attached together with a further 80 municipalities in the counties of Trier and the Saar castle on February 16, 1946, separated from the rest of the French occupation zone Saarland. On June 8, 1947, this French territorial expansion was taken back down to 21 municipalities again so Ayl came to the 1946 newly formed state of Rhineland -Palatinate.

The church today Ayl was taken on June 7, 1969 by recharge from the two previously independent municipalities Ayl (830 inhabitants) and Biebelhausen (234 inhabitants). Since 1970 it belongs to the municipality Saar castle.

Cultural monuments

  • The Ayl Castle is a former Hofgut of the Trier cathedral chapter. The complex of buildings with residential building and press house is in its present form since 1897. A park with mature trees follows.
  • The Catholic parish church of St. Bartholomew is the work of Johann Claudius Lassaulx 1846-1848. You hosts a late-Gothic stone baptism from the period around 1500 from the previous building.

Economy and infrastructure

Ayl has been a wine village from time immemorial. Even the Romans operated on the slopes viticulture. The Church Chronicle already has the 1289 as a good wine year. In the Wine Auction 1906 a load of 1904er Ayler coupling achieved up to then highest ever paid for a Saar wine price of 15,030 gold marks.
