Ayşe Işıl Karakaş

Ayşe Işıl Karakaş ( born December 8, 1958 in Istanbul) is a Turkish legal and political scientist as well as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights.

Life

Karakaş graduated in 1983 studying political science at the University of Istanbul from. In 1986 she finished her studies at the İstanbul Üniversitesi with a degree in Public Law. 1988 was followed by a Diploma in European Law at the European University Centre of the University of Nancy II, and two years later a law degree at Marmara University. In 1991, she joined the Istanbul Bar Association, 1992, she was awarded his doctorate for Doctor of rights.

Between 1993 and 1999 she taught as an assistant and associate professor of political science at the University of Istanbul. This was followed by a position as Associate Professor of Law at the Galatasaray University. There, she was appointed Associate Professor of International Law, 2003. In the previous year they had taken at this university, the management of the "Centre for Research and Documentation on Europe". Between 2002 and 2007 she took over in France visiting professorships at the University Paul Cézanne Aix -Marseille III, University of Reims, Montpellier I University and University of Strasbourg III.

With Appointed May 1, 2008 Karakaş was sent by the Republic of Turkey as a judge to the European Court of Human Rights. It is regarded as a critic of the headscarf ban at Turkish universities and of Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code.
