Az Zubayr

Zubair (Arabic الزبير, DMG -Zubayr ) is an Iraqi city in the province of Basra. Other name variants are az- Zuhair, al-Zubayr, Zubayr, al- Zubair, or Zobier. The city has a population of 124 611 inhabitants in 2007.

Is named the city after the Sahaba Abu ' Abd Allah Zubayr ibn al - Awwam, who is buried here. Sometimes the city is also called Alt- Basra.

In the 19th century there was a large wave of immigration from the Saudi Arabian Najd. These immigrants made ​​up in the 70s or 80s of the 20th century most of the city's population.
