The Azadi Stadium is a football stadium with track and field facility. It is located in the west of the Iranian capital Tehran. Built for the 1974 Asian Games, it has been used since its opening for the games of the top clubs in Iran's Esteghlal FC and Persepolis, and the caps of the Iranian national football team. Currently, the stadium has a capacity of 95 225 seats and is part of the Azadi Sports Complex in Tehran. The stadium is also known for its incredible atmosphere at sold-out games.

History

The stadium was planned for the Asian Games in 1974 and opened three years after the start of construction on 18 October 1973. At the opening of the stadium offered time 100,000 spectators. Originally, it was named in honor of Shah Reza Pahlavi Aryamehr Stadium - Persian ورزشگاه آریامهر ( Warseschgāh -e Āriāmehr to German: " Stadium of Light of the Aryans " ) - called, but after the Islamic Revolution in Azadi Stadium - Persian ورزشگاه آزادی تهران ( Warseschgāh -e Asadi -ye Tehrān to German: " Stadium of Freedom" ) - renamed. In addition to the Asian Games and the Asian Cup in 1976, the stadium was also the center of the Olympic Summer Games 1984. However, the application was withdrawn due to differences in 1977, which is why Los Angeles is the only candidate got the games. In the years 2002 and 2003, the stadium was completely renovated. Apart from installation of new seats, and the inside area was extensively modernized. Furthermore, the grass was replaced and built a soil heating, and new scoreboards. The stadium located in the west of Tehran is part of Azadi sports complex which offers a number of training facilities around the stadium.

Events

In the Azadi Stadium every home game for the Iranian national football team will be held. In addition, it is used for all parts of the Tehran Esteghlal and Persepolis teams in the Iran Pro League ( IPL ) and the other used as a venue for competitions. Since the 2012/13 season, the final of the Cup Hazfi in Azadi Stadium takes place. Should Iran's bid for the Asian Cup 2019 to be successful, here the final and more games would take place .. In addition, the stadium is used for cultural events.
