History

Finds indicate a prehistoric settlement since at least the Chalcolithic period. The Romans called the place Oleastrum, who belonged to the province of Lusitania. After the invasion of Germanic tribes Azambuja was part of the Western Goth. With the acquisition of land 711 by the Moors, the place was Arabic and was Azanbujâ ( wild olive tree).

During the Reconquista of Portugal 's first king D.Afonso Henriques conquered the territory. He gave the now Vila Franca place called 1147 to D.Childe Rolim, son of the Earl of Chester, in recognition of the achievements in the conquest of Lisbon 1147. D.Sancho I. King gave Vila Franca 1200 first town rights and handed over the area to further colonization of D.Rolim de Moura, son of D.Childe Rolim. Over the following centuries the county Azambuja grew gradually. In the course of the various administrative reforms of the Liberal Revolution in 1822 the circle was only extended to Aveiras de Cima and Aveiras de Baixo, and should then be broken down and dissolved Cartaxo. After resistance from the people of the autonomous county Azambuja remained, and got to the municipalities of Vila Nova da Rainha, Manique do Intendente and Alcoentre, in the wake of the dissolution of the former individual circle Alcoentre. Since the end of the 19th century the county existed in its present composition.

The end of 1963 here opened an assembly plant of Ford, which was incorporated in 2000 in the neighboring plant of General Motors ( Opel ). The production of the Opel Combo was discontinued at the end there in 2006, moved to Zaragoza (Spain ) and the Azambuja plant closed.

The Copper Age settlement of Vila Nova de São Pedro is located northwest of the A1 motorway at Cartaxo

Among the monuments of Azambuja also include various mansions and houses a variety of different eras, two gardens, the stone fountain Fonte Santo António, and a number of historic public and private buildings, including the Bullring and the elaborately decorated with azulejos station. Even some religious buildings are to be mentioned, such as the mannerist - baroque parish church Igreja de Azambuja Paroquial from the 16th century, which is named after its patron saint as well as Igreja de Nossa Senhora Assunção (English: Church of Our Lady of the Assumption ).

The historic center is also a listed building as a whole.

Traffic

Azambuja is located on the main railway line in the country, the Linha do Norte.

The National Road N3 connects the village with the approximately 8 km to the south junction No. 4 of the A1 motorway, at Carregado, close to the motorway junction with the A10 motorway. The approximately 7 km to the north of the county road M513 Parish Aveiras de Cima has with junction 5 on another access road to the A1.

In addition to the various private bus lines that represent the regional and national public transport in the county, the municipality has a free minibus line connecting Monday the county municipalities with Azambuja, there to allow all citizens of administrative procedures and errands, particularly elderly or indigent residents.
