Azania Front Lutheran Church

The Azania Front Cathedral is an Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam and the Cathedral of the Diocese of Dar es Salaam, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania.

Location and History

The building is one of the most famous landmarks and tourist attractions of the city. It is located in the city center, close to the sea, overlooking the harbor. The name derives from an earlier name for the bank street. German missionaries left the church during the colonial period in the years 1898-1899 to build. The design created Friedrich Gurlitt.

Architecture and Facilities

The building is a hall church in native style with red tile roofs, tiles, canopies over the windows and bright white walls. Above the central entrance area extends the highly visible tower. The original interior is largely intact. In the nave there are side galleries. The neo-Gothic altar made ​​of tropical hardwood carries the German inscription: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you" ( Jn 14:27 LUT), a pun on the name of Dar -es- Salaam - " House of Peace ".
