Azar Lawrence

Azar Lawrence ( born November 2, 1953 in Los Angeles ) is an American musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone ) of the Creative Jazz

Azar Lawrence stepped up to the beginning of his musical career on Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan People in Arkestra, which he remained connected later. In 1970 he accompanied Clark Terry on his European tours. A friend from high school days, Reggie Golson, son of saxophonist Benny Golson introduced him to Elvin Jones and took him to the music of John Coltrane one with which he was to employ throughout his career. Lawrence played then in 1973 Elvin Jones. A wider audience Lawrence was known for his membership in the quartet of McCoy Tyner, which he accompanied from 1973 to 1977 and belonged to several albums for the Milestone, as Enlightenment, Atlantis and Sana Layuca. He also briefly played in the band of Miles Davis, on the live album Dark Magus of 1974, he is heard. Azar Lawrence appeared at that time nor to panel sessions by Woody Shaw, Harry Whitaker and Beaver Harris. He took 1974-1976 and under his own name three albums for Prestige, one of which is particularly Bridge Into the New Age praised because of their tightness and originality, but then had initially no further opportunity for record releases. Lawrence worked in the 1980s, mostly as a sideman for pop productions, like Earth, Wind & Fire and Marvin Gaye. Appears in 2007 album Speak the World. In 2012 he worked with private Quintet, in the play Eddie Henderson, Benito Gonzalez, Essiet Okon Essiet and Jeff Tain Watts.
