It consists administratively of two municipalities ( Freguesias ): São Lourenço (also Vila Nogueira de Azeitão ) and São Simão ( also Vila Fresca de Azeitão ).

History

The word comes from Azeitão azzeittum, from the Arabic, and refers to the extensive cultivation of olive trees in this region. The first description of the area comes from a document from the Middle Ages of King Dom Pedro I (1320-1367), here's the area between the river and the Serra de Coina Azeitão is described. The population of this area is not as in other areas of the river Sado ( Troia and Setúbal) to the Stone Age and the Phoenicians back, but can be detected only from the 3rd century BC.

After the first decisions on the establishment of a separate district by splitting off from the county Sesimbra was 1786, the county Azeitão. In the course of administrative reform by the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the following Miguelistenkrieg the circle was disbanded in 1855 and Setúbal affiliated.

Attractions and Dining

Azeitão located at the foothills of the Serra Arabida ( Serra de Azeitão ) and is known for the cultivation of good wines and an excellent olive oil and its fruit and nut trees. The vineyard with winery José Maria da Fonseca, which today is one of the great wineries of Portugal, was founded in 1834 in Azeitão. It has large proportion of the popularity of the variety Periquita. Another known winery in Azeitão is Quinta da Bacalhoa. Next to it is the azulejos azulejos de Azeitão manufactory.
