Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater

The Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre (actually Azerbaijani State Academic Opera and Ballet House Axundov; Azerbaijani: Axundov Adina Azərbaycan Dövlət Akademik Opera və Balet TEATRI ) is an opera house in the Azerbaijani capital Baku.

The Opera and Ballet House was founded in 1920 and as a national opera and ballet, it is a cultural institution of Azerbaijan. Institutionally, it is part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan. The building is located in the city center with address, Nizami küçəsi 95

History

The building, which houses the opera and the ballet troupe, was built 1910-1911 in Art Nouveau style. Originally the building was an elite club of the upper class of Baku, which was mainly used for dinners, balls, concerts and other high society events. In 1920 it was finally converted into a state opera and ballet house. In 1927, the Opera and Ballet House named after the Azerbaijani reconnaissance, writer, philosopher and literary critic Mirzə Fətəli Axundov. In 1959, the Opera and Ballet House was honored with an honorary title as an academic theater. Today it is a standard repertoire of Opera and Ballet, whose current repertoire consists of more than 150 opera and ballet performances.
