Azes I.

Azes I. († probably around 35 BC). Was an Indo - Scythian king who ruled from about 57-35 BC

Azes I. is mostly known from his coins. He seems to have the last major Indo- Greek king Hippostratus defeated. He coined the coins, certainly as a sign of victory. His own coins have legends in Greek and Kharoshthi. It is silver and copper coins. They show Greek ( Zeus) and Hindu deities and motifs. On the front, a rider is often accompanied by horse or camel. They were minted in Pushkalavati ( Gandhara ), Taxila and at an unspecified place on the Indus.

With Azes I began a new era, which began in 58 BC, according to many researchers, and later became known as Malwa or Vikrama era, other researchers prefer the beginning of recorded time to the year 45 BC before and see no connection to the Malwa-/Vikrama-Ära.
