Azine

Azines are a group of chemical compounds derived from hydrazine. They are formed as condensation products of hydrazine with carbonyl compounds having the general structure R1R2C = N -N = CR.sup.3R.sup.4, often with symmetrical arrangement of the radicals R1 to R4. Aldehydes form the aldazines, ketones the ketazines. The azines are polar, usually slightly water- soluble solids. Some dyes and pharmaceuticals are among the azines.

Azines are used as starting materials for the synthesis of heterocycles (see eg the Piloty -Robinson pyrrole synthesis ) and used for the preparation of metal complexes.
