Azteca horse

The Aztec is a very recent use horse breed that was created to improve the riding properties in Mexico. There they are bred since the early 1970s, among others in the stud Texoco in Mexico City.

Background information on the evaluation and breeding horses can be found at: exterior, interior and horse breeding.

Exterior

The Aztec is similar in type to the Spanish and North American breeds and provides a lightweight, mid-sized riding horse dar. His head is dry and fine, mostly straight or sub-convex profile. Small ears and beautiful eyes round off the impression of the head part, which arises from a strongly muscled, nicely arched and well -set neck. With a long and sloping shoulder of the withers are moderately pronounced. The strong and short back goes into a long, slightly sloping croup. The hull is characterized by sufficient depth and width, however, is partly behind slightly overbuilt. Despite its delicate appearance, the foundation is sufficiently stable and has dry, partly a little tight joints, as well as small, hard hooves on. The mechanism is elegant, but it sure-footed and agile.

Interior

Due to the close relationship to the origin of races of Spain and the western horses of North America the Aztec is equipped with a pleasant, quiet temperament.

Breeding history

In the early 1970s awoke in Mexico the realization that most of the domestic horse breeds could not satisfy in terms of quality and performance. It was therefore decided to make an improvement by back breeding.

About the Criollos Mexican horses date back to the Spanish breeds, as well as by the geographical proximity to North America on the Western horse breeds, specifically the American Quarter Horse.

Through the pairing of Andalusian and Quarter stallions with Criollo mares so could be grown with good success the breed of the Aztecs. Specifically, the proximity to the Spanish horses helped the breed characteristics that fit perfectly to the Mexican claims. It was thus created Sense, which is especially useful when working on the haciendas a fast, elegant horse with a lot of cow.

1982 Breeders' Association Asociacion Mexicana de Caballos de Raza Azteca Criadores was founded, which also leads the studbook of the breed. For registration in the stud book a blood proportion of three to five-eighth or quarter- Andalusian blood and a maximum of one quarter Criollo blood is prescribed.
