History

Although Mexico City / 44 a total of five clubs ( América, Asturias, Atlante, España and Marte ) was represented in the newly created professional league with the introduction of professional football in Mexico in 1943, decreed the capital at that time not yet have a stadium that is constantly the growing public interest would have been justice.

This unsatisfactory situation inspired the businessman Neguib Simón to build a stadium for 40,000 spectators. Thus, the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes arose. But the clubs or the clubs regulating League Mayor, as the forerunner of the Primera División still called to 1950, showed no interest, there to settle their home matches. This was based on supposedly " poor visibility " Officially, but it may be assumed that they were not willing to pay the required rent.

Due to the high costs that had caused on the one side of the stadium, and the non-availability of the object on the other side, Simón was in a difficult financial situation. The pressure bearing down on it was reinforced by Maximino Ávila Camacho because a certain amount of the property allegedly wanted to crack under the nail itself. Therefore, the speculator Moisés Cosio had an easy time when he offered Simón, it abzukaufen the stadium. Cosio also acquired that is still the Parque Asturias, where the capital clubs had played their home games usually so far, and then withdrew it football. So he could be sure that the Mayor league the new building, for which he simultaneously increased the lease, could not refuse.

But Cosio had backed the wrong horse. Because the Mayor League was not willing to pay the higher rent and sat unceremoniously from the championship. Finally, the President of Mexico stepped in and ordered the reopening of the Parque Asturias and a reasonable rent for the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes on. Some years later, the Olympic Stadium was opened, which quickly became the new capital of the stage football.

After the club Atlante had chosen the stadium to its fixed abode, the stadium name was the club colors according to Azulgrana ( Blue Red stadium or - blue - red garnet Stadium - more detail ) changed.

Since the beginning of the 1996/97 season, the stadium is home to the solid CD Cruz Azul and since then has also its present name.

A special feature of the stadium is that it is built in the form of a pit, and the pitch is below the road level.

Although Mexico has twice hosted the Football World Cup (1970 and 1986 ), a FIFA World Cup match was played at the Estadio Azul.
