B'Tselem

B'Tselem (Hebrew "image ", see Genesis 1:27) is a non-governmental organization, was established on 3 February 1989 by prominent academics, attorneys, journalists and Knesset members.

B'Tselem 's mission is to detect violations of human rights in the occupied territories, to inform the Israeli public and legislators about it, and contribute to a more humane society. The organization wants claims to make no difference whether they are committed by Israeli or Palestinian side. Your primary goal as Israeli human rights organization, however, is to change Israeli policy in the Occupied Territories and ensure that Israel protects the human rights of the local population and meet its obligations to the international law. History

B'Tselem was founded on February 3, 1989. The name refers to the biblical passage Genesis 1:27 " B'Tselem Elohim " ( German: in the image of God ) after the God of the Bible have created man in his own image. The organization sees this as a unison with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations, which says that all men are created equal and therefore would have the right to equal treatment.

Among the founders of the academic Daphna Golan - Agnon, who also founded the group Bat Shalom, David Zucker belonged ( the former Knesset party Ratz ), one of the founders of the peace group, Shalom Achschaw and Haim Oron ( Knesset member of the Mapam party ).

Financing

B'Tselem is independent and is supported by various organizations in Europe, Israel and the United States. Among the sponsors are the European Commission, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, the EED and the Ford Foundation.
