Bab Tuma

Bāb Tūmā (Arabic باب توما ) is one of the seven gates of Damascus and at the same term for a distributors and centuries-old city gate to the district in the eastern part of the old town. The district is now inhabited almost exclusively by Christians and is one of several thousand inhabitants. The Christian religion is lived by the people freely and openly, of which a large number of churches and small altars testifies in road niches. Public life is relatively autonomous from that in the rest of Damascus. Almost all shops have opened Friday ( Islamic holiday), many shopkeepers close but on Sundays.

Bāb Tūmā is also known as student quarters. A large proportion of students in Damascus Western or Asian foreigners is housed with families in Bab Touma.
