Babahoyo is the capital of the Ecuadorian province of Los Ríos, the capital of the canton Babahoyo and had 76 869 inhabitants in 2001, according to census, in 2005, the population was estimated at 84,421.

The city is surrounded by the rivers San Pablo and the Caracol, which on the city the River Babahoyo, the south continues to flow in the Guayas. Babahoyo is located on one of the main routes connecting the country to the most traveled route from Guayaquil to Quito.

The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Babahoyo.
