Bacchus (grape)

Bacchus or Early Scheurebe is a white grape that is a cross of ( Silvaner x Riesling) and Müller- Thurgau. The details of the breeder to the crossing parents could be confirmed in the meantime by DNA analysis. Peter Morio and Bernhard Husfeld they bred at the Institute for Grapevine Breeding Geilweilerhof in 1933. Their approval in Germany took place in 1972 with the entry in the list of varieties. The grape is grown mainly in Germany and in England. Small stocks are also known in Switzerland (1.6 hectares in 2007).

Bacchus owes its popularity among growers particularly the fact that they - unlike the Riesling - an early maturing variety has reached very high levels of maturity and therefore can be grown in locations that are largely unsuitable for the Riesling. The wines obtained from it are aromatic ( aromas in wine) and fruity, but only if the reading material is fully developed. However, the wines sometimes lack the acid, so it is often blended with Müller- Thurgau. Their relatively neutral wines they enriched with their fruit and their Bouquet - together they are an integral part of among wine connoisseurs often not highly valued Liebfrauenmilch.

Bacchus is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic disadvantage is avoided, no return delivered to have male plants grow.
