Bach-Archiv Leipzig

The Bach - Archiv Leipzig is a central research and documentation center on the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach. In addition, it is dedicated to the Bach family and their musical work as a whole.

The archive was founded on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach in 1950 by Werner Neumann. The aim of the new facility was to merge and central archiving of all manuscripts and historical documents related to the composer and the creation of a Bach Research Centre.

Today, the archive is a world-renowned center for Bach research. It houses an extensive scientific library to the creek topic. Through its research mandate addition, the Bach-Archiv applies to a broad public: once with the Bach Museum, on the other hand with the implementation of internationally renowned events, especially the annual Leipzig Bach Festival and the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition.

His seat has the archive in the past Bosehaus at the Leipzig Thomaskirchhof 15/16 against the St. Thomas Church, where it is in 1985, relocated from its founding place, the Gohliser castle. The Bach-Archiv is a member of the Conference of National Cultural Institutions and since 1998 a civil law foundation.

The Bach Museum Leipzig is located in the same building complex. The archive and the museum, most notably the entrance, was in the years 2008 to 2010, according to the latest safety criteria for the collections and educational knowledge expanded and renovated and inaugurated on 20 March 2010.

The Bach-Archiv has been included in the book published in 2001 Blue Book. The Blue Book is a list of nationally important cultural institutions in East Germany and currently consists of 20 so-called cultural beacons.

Since 23 November 2008, the archive is an official institute of the University of Leipzig.
