Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis

The Bach - Werke-Verzeichnis ( BWV ) is the most popular directory of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. It is arranged thematically and was released in 1950 in his first version of the musicologist Wolfgang Schmieder. In the sacred cantatas Schmieder followed the order of Bach 's edition, the numbering had been naturalized; followed by other groups of vocal works and then works for organ and piano and chamber and orchestral music. The individual work groups begin first with cycles (if any) or otherwise more representative groups and can then individually follow traditional works.

Since then it has undergone several enhancements and fixes, but is unchanged in its basic structure. Since now more of Bach's works were found, others were, however, proved to be spurious, the numbering is partially incomplete and supplemented in accordance with the number 1080 works that are actually outside the appropriate number ranges. Furthermore, a multi-part List of Appendices with dubious works exist.

A more recent, also major Bach works directory is the Bach Compendium.
