Back on the Block is an album by Quincy Jones, which was published in 1989. The album takes a large number of prominent musicians from different genres on, including Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul, Ice-T, Big Daddy Kane, Dizzy Gillespie, George Benson, Luther Vandross, Dionne Warwick, Barry White, Chaka Khan, Take 6, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau and Ray Charles. The album contains the last studio recordings by Ella Fitzgerald, had worked with Jones in 1963, and Sarah Vaughan.
Reception
The album won seven Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Award for "Album of the Year". Richard S. Ginell rated the album at Allmusic with four out of five stars and wrote:
"Later, jazz buffs would vilify Jones for not taking fuller advantage of this one -time constellation of jazz stars, but at the time, it Seemed like a marvelous dialogue in between the old and the new .... Yet Back on the Block remains a strikingly durable piece of entertainment, and in hindsight, a poignant signpost of the changing of the guard. "
