Backoffice

As a Back Office is that portion of a company which is not of original part of the core business, but serves to its continuation. Typical duties of back office include: Accounting, Credit Risk Management, IT Support and organization of the meeting in public companies.

In a trading company, for example the purchasing, sales and marketing core business. The back office handles the accounting, customs clearance, the operation of the computer system and the Credit Risk Management.

A special role often takes the legal department in a company which, although also supports the operation of the core business, but is usually not counted to the back office.

The term has been mentioned in various IT products, especially Microsoft BackOffice as a group name for the portfolio of different server systems such as NT Server, SQL Server, Exchange mail server. The name is now but no longer used by Microsoft.
