Backronym

The term Backronym (English [ bækɹənɪm ] ) refers to a word whose individual graphemes only be interpreted later as the initial letters of words, and are joined together in their entirety to a group of words. Backronym is a portmanteau of back (English for reverse) and acronym (English for acronym).

Differentiation

Backronyme must be distinguished from Apronymen as a special form of acronyms.

• Acronym: Designates a portmanteau formed from the initial letters or syllables of several words of a word group, such as laser, radar, AIDS
• Apronym: first letter of a word group form an acronym, which also represents a real - existing word form of a natural language, such as the USA PATRIOT Act
• Backronym: Individual letters of a real existing word be reinterpreted as the initial letters of different words of a word group and give the word so that the appearance of an acronym, such as marriage → errare humanum est ( to err is human )

Use

Translations

Backronyme in the literature or in films, which are translated or synchronized from another language, used a term, which is an acronym in the original language and, for example, to see the movie on an object and is therefore not changed may be, to give a meaning when the literal translation of the acronym meaning does not lead to the same letter. An example is the TARDIS from Doctor Who.
