Backronym

The term Backronym (English [ bækɹənɪm ] ) refers to a word whose individual graphemes only be interpreted later as the initial letters of words, and are joined together in their entirety to a group of words. Backronym is a portmanteau of back (English for reverse) and acronym (English for acronym).

Differentiation

Backronyme must be distinguished from Apronymen as a special form of acronyms.

  • Acronym: Designates a portmanteau formed from the initial letters or syllables of several words of a word group, such as laser, radar, AIDS
  • Apronym: first letter of a word group form an acronym, which also represents a real - existing word form of a natural language, such as the USA PATRIOT Act
