Bácsalmás

Bácsalmás [ba ː tʃɒlma ː ʃ ] ( German Heimer churches, Croat. Aljmaš and Bačaljmaš ) is a city in Hungarian Bács -Kiskun with nearly 7,000 inhabitants ( 2011). It is located about 200 km south of Budapest, directly on the border with Serbia.

German and Croatian minorities

Before the Second World War Almasch / Bácsalmás was a multi- ethnic community with a strong minority of Germans ( Danube Swabians) and Croats. After the expulsion of a substantial part of the Germans in 1946, Hungarian refugees from the present-day Slovakia were settled. At the same time, the Croats assimilated in recent decades gradually. In the census of 2001, there were only 229 residents who expressed their belonging to the German minority and 125 inhabitants to the Croatian.
