Bacula

Bacula is a set of computer programs that allow you to back up data in a heterogeneous network, restore or verify. Technically, it is a network-enabled backup program with Client / Server architecture.

Bacula addition to Linux, Unix, Mac OS X and Windows backup clients support a range of professional backup devices including tape libraries. Administrators and operators can control the system from a single console, GUI or web interface; the configuration is done in text files. As a backend for storing meta- information database systems MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQLite are used.

2007 Bacula was called together with Amanda and BackupPC as one of the three most popular open source backup utilities.

Structure

Bacula basically consists of three daemons that provide the functions of Backup and Restore. The daemons communicate over TCP / IP, even if Bacula is installed on a single machine:

Last Bacula consists of a further element of bconsole. About this command line, you will receive access to the Director and can manually back up data or are restoring, label the tapes and leave in addition to many other operations, for example, give an overview of spilled fuses. In addition to the command line with bconsole there is a GUI called BAT, as well as multiple web front ends, one of which is functionally bweb the most extensive.

Variants

Bacula Enterprise

The so-called " Bacula Enterprise Edition" mixes the open source version with proprietary code and is offered free of charge. The sources are not public. For some time, new features are primarily developed in this variant, the community version is barely developed further.

Bareos

Since 2010 is a fork in development, were included in the contributions from the Bacula open source community. The first stable version 12.4 was released in early 2013. Bareos is 100% open source and brings many new features, including:

  • Support for hardware encryption on LTO -4
  • NDMP protocol support
  • Preview of the configured backup jobs for the next 30 days.

Bacula Systems raises Bareos right to have illegally taken over the proprietary code from Bacula Enterprise version in Bareos. Bacula Systems has therefore filed against the Bareos GmbH & Co KG action .. Bareos rejects these allegations.
