Badminton at the 2012 Summer Olympics

At the Olympic Games 2012 in London five competitions were from July 28 to August 5, 2012 at Wembley Arena held in badminton, Individual competition for women and men, and double competitions for women, men and mixed doubles. In London it was the first time a combination of group matches and knockout phase. For participation in the Games, the athletes had to go through an almost one-year qualification. The draw for the Olympic tournament took place on 23 July at 10 clock (UTC ) in the press in the Olympic Park in London.

Competitions and schedule

Tournament mode

In these Olympics was played for the first time in groups. There were 16 groups in the singles and four groups of four in the doubles. The group winners in the individual as well as first and second in the double disciplines qualified for the knockout phase. Due to the regulations for the draw of the groups were in the men's singles, the eight top-seeded players in groups of two to, in women's singles, only the two top-seeded players. All other groups in the individual disciplines consisted of three athletes.

The new group mode enabled the manipulation of games. Four double matings among women who had already qualified for another round trying to lose their last group game and shot the ball intentionally out of play or into the net: Wang Xiaoli / Yu Yang (China), Jung Ha -na Kyung-eun/Kim Ha Jung-eun/Kim Min -jung (all South Korea) and Greysia Polii / Meiliana Jauhari (Indonesia). All eight players were excluded from the Badminton World Federation of the Olympic Games.
