Baelen ( Walloon Bailou ) is a municipality in the province of Liège in Wallonia in Belgium, with a total of 4312 inhabitants ( 1 January 2012) and an area of ​​85.73 km ². At the site include the hamlets Nereth, Overoth, yard, Heggen, Honthem and the area lying on the border with Eupen former monastery Garnstock, with a church building to designs by Dominic Böhm.

History

The first mention of the place " Baelus " dates from the year 888 from the Catholic Church which alloyed the Duke of Limburg in 1176 the abbot of the Abbey Rolduc the pastoral care of parishes Duchy. Rolduc set to 1792 the pastor and priests in the area, so Baelen was until 1695 mother parish of the much larger town of Eupen.
