Baghdad Governorate

The Iraqi government Baghdad (Arabic محافظة بغداد Muhafazat Baġdād ) consists of the capital Baghdad and the surrounding area. With 734 km ² it is the smallest and with a population of 7,935,699 ( 2010 calculation ) is the most populous of the 18 governorates of Iraq. Once Baghdad was the most developed provinces of Iraq. Since the U.S. invasion in 2003 much has been destroyed.

The province consists of the following 8 districts:

  • Al - Karch ( Baghdad west of the Tigris )
  • Rusafa ( eastern Baghdad, the Tigris )
  • Al - Thawra ( Saddam City / Sadr City )
  • Al - Kadhimiya
  • Al - Mahmudiya
  • Abu Ghraib
  • Al - Madain
  • Al - Adhamiya

On 15 October 2005 of 2,120,615 voters voted 77.70 % yes for the new constitution.
