Occupation

The album

Two months after the Walkin' session in April 1954, the trumpeter went with his rhythm section and with the young tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, who is now also recorded already under his own name plates back into the studio. They played three new, partly in the studio completed Rollins compositions, Oleo, Doxy and Airegin, all of which were to jazz standards. In the title Oleo Miles Davis led a new sound in jazz: he played with his Harmon - steamer at a studio recording directly into the microphone. These dampers method produced a sound of breathless abundance in the depths and a florett sharp intensity in the high registers. He thus achieved an expressive width of dreamy melancholy to hectic and manic anxiety. Sonny Rollins scored with his dry harsh tone production with these recordings his artistic breakthrough. In this recording session, two takes of the Gershwin classic originated But Not for Me

On Christmas Eve of 1954, Miles Davis led a panel session where the title track of the album was recorded: Besides his rhythm section Prestige Records boss Bob Weinstock Milt Jackson and Thelonious Monk had committed. Most recordings were released in 1958 on the LP Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants. In this recording session also produced two takes of Jackson Blues Bags' Groove. Miles had stipulated during the studio date that Monk should not accompany his solos him. " The exclusion of all piano chordal helped Davis to a new spatial dimension. Miles blows two solos - a long on top and a shorter end -. Those who drive the cult of pure sounds, the sheer tonal beauty the absolute highlight and surpass all his previous recordings (including the phenomenal "Walkin ' " ) "Monk offers in his solo inserts a contrast: particularly impressive dissonances and even longer breaks than usual, he hammers on the piano his alternative program to Miles. (...) The improvisational deposits Milt Jackson between Miles ' first and Monk's solo available to the other in every way. For Max Harrison, however, Monk's solo on Bags' Groove is the highlight of the recording session. Such was also the reviewer of the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik: " An event in itself is Monk's solo, economical, while at the same time opening up a whole world of sounds and rhythms; it provides material for at least half a dozen hours lessons in composition.
