Bahía Blanca

Bahía Blanca is the capital of the Bahía Blanca Partido in eastern Argentina. It is located in the south of the province of Buenos Aires on the Atlantic coast and has about 280,000 inhabitants.

The name means White Bay, and also the name of the bay, is located on the Bahia Blanca. The name comes from the fact that the bay is very shallow and therefore the water very far retires at low tide, creating a wide, "white" sandy surface is visible.

Geography

Bahía Blanca is located on the southwestern end of the Pampa húmeda ( humid pampas ), the landscape is here in the dry Pampa in the west and in the Patagonian Monte landscape in the south over. About 70 kilometers north of the city lies the mountain range of the Sierra de la Ventana, whose foothills extending as far into the hills north of the urban area. The climate is oceanic and warmgemäßigt, with very warm summers, cool winters and an average precipitation rate (712 mm per year ).

History

Bahía Blanca slowly developed in the 19th century from a settlement out that had been created by an expedition in 1823. She remained long a lonely outpost, since the territory was still dominates around them for the most part of Indian tribes. In 1869 the city had 2,000 inhabitants. In subsequent years, the city developed into a service center and port for the surrounding farms. 1882 a railway line was inaugurated in Buenos Aires, and from there, the city developed rapidly into a major export port. Attractions

In the city center there are several magnificent buildings from the era of the turn of the century, decorated in the style of neo-classicism and Art Nouveau: the theater, the building of the Banco Nación, the Palace of Justice and the town hall. The cathedral is decorated in neo-colonial style.

Economy
