Bahir Dar

Bahir Dar ( Amharic ባሕር ዳር bahərdar ) is the capital of the Ethiopian Amhara province and the third largest city of Ethiopia.

It is located 320 km north-northwest of Addis Ababa in 1840 m altitude on the southern shore of Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. The discharge of the Blue Nile on the eastern edge of the city is regulated by a dam and crossed by a bridge.

One of the palaces of Haile Selassie is in the vicinity of the town, 30 km south-east, the Tisissat waterfalls of the Blue Nile are ( Abbai ).

History

The city grew around a mission of the Jesuits, which was built in the 16th or 17th century.

At the end of the Ethiopian Civil War Bahir Dar was taken in March 1991 by the troops of the People's Liberation Front of Tigray.
