Baignes

Baignes is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Baignes situated at an altitude of 222 m above sea level, about 9 km southwest of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the central part of the department, in a valley at the source of Baignotte, at the western foot of the heights, which rise between the river valleys of the Saône and Ognon.

The area of ​​2.87 km ² municipal area includes a portion in the region of the upper Saônebeckens. The central part of the area occupied by the basin of the Baignotte that rises here and ensures the drainage north to Durgeon. To the west and southwest of the municipality of soil ranges on the plateau of the upper Saônebeckens which is on average 250 m. It is used for agriculture, but also shows some forest areas. With a narrow strip, the municipality's area extends to the southeast on a wooded slope to the adjacent ridge of the Côte d' Andelarre that belongs to the hilly area between the Saône and Ognon. It consists of carbonate sediments of the middle Jurassic period. With 378 m is reached on the top of the Bois Monsieur the highest elevation of Baignes.

Neighboring communities of Baignes are clans in the north, Velle -le- Châtel in the east, Mailley -et- Chazelot and Rosey in the south and Raze in the West.

History

The name of Baignes goes back to a time immemorial occupied spa at the Source de la Font. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. Since 1390 the local noble family of Baignes is mentioned. Together with the Franche -Comté Baignes came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. In the 16th century, a blacksmith shop and a blast furnace were built, who used the water power of the Baignotte. The iron works was in 1890 converted into a foundry, which stopped operating in 1960. Today Baignes is a member of the 22 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes des Combes.

Attractions

Worth seeing are the buildings of the former ironworks in the style of architecture from the era of the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century, including warehouse, workers' houses, stables, orangery and a dovecote. The facility is classified as a monument historique.

Population

With 99 inhabitants ( 2005) Baignes one of the smallest municipalities in the department of Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 292 persons were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and infrastructure

Baignes was marked since the beginning of the industrial age through the iron work and the subsequent foundry. Today there are some farms and individual farms of the local small business sector. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the agglomeration Vesoul.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes on a secondary road, leading from Velle -le- Châtel by Rosey.
