Baileys Prairie is a city in Brazoria County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The place is situated in southeast Texas between Angleton and West Columbia, is about 25 kilometers from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 19.9 km ², of which 0.5 km ² water surface are. The distance to Houston in the north is about 70 kilometers.

History

Was named the place after James Britton Bailey, a veteran of the War of 1812, with his wife and six children came in 1818 in this region and country, took possession of about 4500 acres, with the consent of the then Spanish government in this area. The possession claim was later disputed by Stephen F. Austin, but then again awarded to him on July 7, 1824. Other settlers settled around the plantation of Bailey. In 1839 the first church was established. Even today most of the land belongs to a few large ranchers, leaving only little space is given to industry, which is reflected in the population figures. In 1972 there were 228 people, 410 in 1988 and 634 in 1990. 20% of the current inhabitants are German, 8% Irish ancestry.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 694 people in 237 households and 201 families. The population density was 35.7 inhabitants per km ². Ethnically, the population itself is composed of 80.84 % White, 14.12% Black or African American, 0.86 % Native American, 0.14 % Asian, 0.43 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 2.02 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.59% are descended from two or more races and 10.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 237 households 35.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 77.6 % were married couples living together. 6.3% were single mothers and 14.8 % were non-families. 13.1 % of all households were single-person households and 4.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size is 3.18 people.

26.4 % of the population were under 18 years old, 7.8 % from 18 to 24, 24.4% 25-44, 33.9 % from 45 to 64, and 7.6 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 104.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 98.8 males.

The median income for a household in the 73 125 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family 90 648 U.S. dollars. Males have a median income of $ 47 083 U.S. dollar against the women with 29 609 U.S. dollars. The per capita income was 32,267 dollars. 4.3% of the population and 1.9 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 2.6 % have children under the age of 18 and 4.9 % of those 65 or older.
