Bailey Howell

Bailey E. Howell ( born December 20, 1937 in Middleton, Tennessee ) is a former American professional basketball player. With the Boston Celtics Howell twice won the championship of the NBA. On the position of the power forwards, he played twelve NBA seasons and was ranked at end of his career in 1971 in nine statistical categories among the top ten players in the league. For his achievements Howell was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997.

College

Between 1957 and 1959, Howell played for the team of Mississippi State University ( MSU). Once against the top team from the University of Kentucky, he recorded 37 points in his first season and was able to collect 34 rebounds against Louisiana State University in the same season, Howell attracted nationwide attention. In the course of the season Howell led his team to the University record of 17 wins, reaching an average rate of 56.8 percent litter box per game. For his achievements, he was elected Sophomore of the Year in the Southeastern Conference of the NCAA.

1958 Howell scored an average of 27.8 points per game and was named All-American (second team). In addition, he was elected Most Valuable Player of the Southeastern Conference. In 1959, he won with the MSU the title of the Southeastern Conference and was honored again as All-American ( first team).

In his collegiate career Howell scored with MSU a score of 61 victories in 14 defeats. He became the first player with at least 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in the history of the South East Conference. This brand achieved since only Tom Gola and Oscar Robertson.

NBA

In NBA Draft 1959 Howell was selected second by the Detroit Pistons. So Howell is still the highest in the Draft drawn alumnus of MSU. In his first six seasons Howell reached double-digit levels in points and rebounds. From 1961 to 1967 he also took part in six times in a row at the NBA All- Star Game.

In the second half of his career, Howell met for three seasons with the Boston Celtics, where he managed the front court to Bill Russell and reinforced in 1968 and 1969 respectively with the team won the NBA title. His last season as a professional Howell played for the Philadelphia 76ers, but for the first time in his career for less than 20 minutes operating time per game.

In 950 NBA games over 12 seasons Bailey Howell scored a total of 17,700 points ( 18.7 per game), 9,383 rebounds ( 9.9 per game ) and 1,853 assists (2.0 per game).
